Marine Vessels
Our fleet of marine vessels have all the capabilities necessary to haul freight big or small at sea or on inland rivers. Each vessel comes with its own unique capabilities allowing us to match our customer needs and perform the required service.
Line Haul Tug and Barge
Our line-haul barge “Madison Bay” transports a variety of cargo including containers and equipment from Seattle and Seward into multiple primary Alaska ports including Dutch Harbor, Dillingham, Bethel, Nome, Barrow, and Prudhoe Bay.
With an 7,000 Ton capacity and 18,000 square feet of deck space, this isn’t a precision machine like the other Bowhead vessels in our fleet, it’s our work horse
LANDING CRAFT
The 150ft Landing Craft, “Unalaq,” is one of our principle marine vessels available to provide service in all regions of Alaska. It has a shallow draft of 4’ to 6’ (depending on load) and is supplied with all the necessary equipment for loading and off-loading cargo. On the Unalaq, we have accommodations for up to ten guests in five staterooms a commercial kitchen and dining room. We also carry a variety of equipment suited to our unique client needs including a 19’ Rigid Hull inflatable with 90 HP outboard motor, Hitachi 110 Excavator, Masted Volvo 220 Loader (capable of carrying 40,000 lbs.), fork extensions for the Volvo Loader, and 20 DuraMatts for building roadway on beaches or other soft terrain.
Ocean and River Ramp Barge
The “Spruce” Barge is a 10,000 Square Foot / 3400 Ton capacity ramp barge capable of shallow water, technically challenging beach landings in remote areas and ports. We utilize the “Sitka” tug with an 8’ draft and the Spruce barge for a variety of services including line-haul cargo and equipment delivery, transport of rock, gravel, soil and supersacks, project mobilization and de-mobilization. Our Spruce Barge has a unique 60ft hydraulic ramp custom designed for a variety of uses. This barge is available the entire year for specialized charter service in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
River Based Push Boats and Barges
Our 130’ by 35’ barge “Ace,” 79’ by 40’ barge “Arvik,” and 75’ by 32’ barge “Kalskag,” are all extreme shallow draft barges capable of transit in rivers and near coastal waterways. These river vessels are currently providing service in Bethel and the entire Kuskokwim River system as well as the Dillingham / Nushagak River system.
Our open deck barges have removable 29’ ramps, 4,000, 2,500, and 2,100 square feet of usable deck space, and a maximum weight capacity of up to 600 Tons. Our 26’, three story push boats, “Kautauraq” and “Little Miska,” have a combined 660 HP each and can maneuver extremely well in swift, shallow water with limited space. This push boat & barge combination is an outstanding platform for a number of inland and near coastal services including, hauling gravel, cargo, and equipment.
HIGH-SPEED TRANSPORT
Bowhead Transport has two smaller, specialized shallow-draft coastal and river lighterage vessels available—The M/V Doctor Island and M/V Crescent Island. These high-speed landing crafts are designed to provide small cargo transport and accommodate guests in an enclosed heated cabin. Cargo capacity up to 4000 lbs. Both of these marine vessels have twin Volvo engines and can cruise at speeds over 30 knots.
